The letter is drawn properly

Every H on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — two straight stems, a crossbar halfway up, and a line thick enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with H

Horse, house, hat, heart, hen, hippo, helicopter, hedgehog, honey, hammer, hot air balloon and hamster. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small H things.

Nothing arrives filled in

H is the letter with the most things that normally come pre-coloured. A hippo is usually a solid grey animal, a top hat a black cylinder, a hedgehog's back a dark spiky mass, a hot air balloon a set of alternating dark panels. None of them are here — the hippo is white paper, the hedgehog's spines are thirty separate open shapes you could count one by one, and every panel of the balloon is empty.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase H and the big lowercase h are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned H, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
