The letter is drawn properly

Every G on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a full round bowl, a flat crossbar, and a line thick enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with G

Giraffe, goat, grapes, guitar, ghost, gift, goose, gorilla, gingerbread man, globe, grasshopper and glasses. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small G things.

Nothing arrives filled in

A gorilla is normally a solid black animal, a bunch of grapes a dark purple mass, a gingerbread man a brown biscuit and a pair of sunglasses two dark lenses. None of them are here — the gorilla is white paper, the grapes are twenty-five separate open circles you can count, and you can see straight through every lens on the page.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase G and the big lowercase g are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned G, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
