The letter is drawn properly

Every F on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a straight stem and two arms, with a line thick enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with F

Fish, frog, flower, fire engine, feather, fan, fork, flag, fairy, flamingo, fruit and football. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small F things.

Nothing arrives filled in

A football is normally drawn with solid black pentagons, a fire engine with two black tyres, a feather with dense dark barbs and a watermelon slice with solid black pips. None of them are here — every panel on the ball is white with a small star inside it to colour, the wheels are open rings of separate treads, and every seed in the fruit bowl is an open ring.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase F and the big lowercase f are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned F, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
