The letter is drawn properly

Every E on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a straight stem and three even arms, with a line thick enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with E

Elephant, egg, eagle, elf, envelope, Earth, eel, emu, engine, eggplant, easel and elk. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small E things.

Nothing arrives filled in

An elephant is normally a solid grey animal, an eggplant a near-black vegetable, an emu a dark shaggy bird and a steam engine a black locomotive. None of them are here — the elephant is white paper, the eggplant is an outline with nothing inside it, and the emu's twenty-five plumes are separate open shapes you could count one by one.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase E and the big lowercase e are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned E, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
