The letter is drawn properly

Every D on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a straight stem, a full bowl, and a counter big enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with D

Dog, duck, dinosaur, dolphin, doughnut, drum, deer, daisy, dragonfly, dice, doll and dragon. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small D things.

Nothing arrives filled in

A dog's nose and a duck's feet are normally solid black, a dolphin a solid grey animal, a doughnut's hole a dark opening and a die's pips solid dots. None of them are here — the pips are open circles, the dragonfly's wings are forty separate open cells, and the dragon's scales are rows of open crescents.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase D and the big lowercase d are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned D, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
