The letter is drawn properly

Every B on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. On a page whose job is to teach a child a letter, the shape has to be the right shape — a straight stem and two stacked bowls, with counters big enough to colour inside.

Twelve things beginning with B

Bear, bee, bird, boat, ball, book, bus, butterfly, banana, balloon, bicycle and bunny. Each is drawn large below the letter, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small B things.

Nothing arrives filled in

A bee is normally drawn with solid black stripes, a bicycle with two black tyres, a bear as a solid brown animal and a balloon as a filled shape with a shine. None of them are here — the bee's bands are open, both wheels are rings of separate spokes you can count, and every one of the seven balloons is white paper waiting for a colour.

Which page to start with

The big uppercase B and the big lowercase b are the simplest — one huge shape each. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned B, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
