Download PDF A4 PNGThe letter is drawn properly
Every A on these pages is set from a real typeface and outlined exactly, not sketched. That matters more here than anywhere else on this site: a page whose job is to teach a child the shape of a letter has to show the right shape, with the crossbar in the right place and the counter — the triangle in the middle — big enough to colour.
Twelve things beginning with A
Apple, ant, alligator, acorn, anchor, aeroplane, avocado, astronaut, ambulance, alpaca, axolotl and abacus. Each is drawn large in the lower two thirds of the page with the uppercase and lowercase letter above it, so the sound and the shape are learned together. There is a thirteenth page setting all twelve out in a grid, and a doodle sheet of twenty small A things.
Nothing arrives filled in
An ant is normally a solid black insect, an avocado stone a dark ball, an astronaut's visor a mirrored dome and an abacus's beads solid discs. None of them are here. The alpaca's fleece is thirty-five open curls and the axolotl's gills are separate fronds rather than a dark plume, so the fiddly bits are the fun ones rather than the lost ones.
Which page to start with
The big uppercase A and the big lowercase a are the simplest — one huge shape each, with a line thick enough for a crayon. The bubble letter and the sheet of mixed letters to hunt through come next. The patterned A, divided into bands of lattice, scallops and rings, will hold an older child or an adult.
Printing
Print at 100% scale rather than “fit to page”, and match the file to your paper — Letter or A4. The button at the top bundles all twenty into a single download.
Frequently asked questions
Are these letter A coloring pages free?
Yes — every page is a free PDF with no signup, no email and no watermark on the artwork.
Is there an uppercase and a lowercase A?
Yes — one page for each at full size, a third with the pair together, and both letters printed above every picture page.
What A words are included?
Apple, ant, alligator, acorn, anchor, aeroplane, avocado, astronaut, ambulance, alpaca, axolotl and abacus, plus a grid of all twelve and a doodle sheet.
Are these tracing or handwriting worksheets?
No. Every page here is drawn to be coloured in — there are no dotted letters to trace and no cutting lines.
Which page suits the youngest child?
The big uppercase A: one enormous letter with a thick outline and nothing else on the page.
Which page suits an older child?
The patterned A, filled with bands of lattice, scallops and rings, or the doodle sheet of twenty small A things.
Are there pages for the other letters?
Yes — there is a set of twenty for every letter of the alphabet.
What paper size are the files?
Every page comes in both US Letter and A4, so it prints properly on either.
