Nothing arrives already coloured

Apples are usually drawn with a shaded curve down one side to show they are round, and a white blob where the light catches. Both decide the colour for you. Not here — every apple in this set is blank white paper inside one clean outline, so it can be red, green, yellow or striped.

The seeds are outlines too, not black pips, and the same care runs through the rest: the basket weave has white showing through every gap, the chequered cloth is open squares rather than alternating dark ones, the pie lattice has white between the strips, and the sprinkles on the toffee apples are little rings rather than dots.

Two sheets that are really worksheets

One page has five apples in a row growing from smallest to biggest with five empty boxes underneath, for counting or writing numbers in. Another shows six different apple shapes — tall, round, small, ribbed, heart-shaped, flat — each with a blank label box, so a child can name them. Both are left completely empty on purpose.

Inside an apple

One sheet shows a whole apple, a half cut down the middle with its core and five seeds, and a quarter wedge. The botanical plate does the same in more detail, with a blossom and a leaf laid out as an old plant illustration.

Where apples come from and what they become

An apple tree in fruit, an orchard with a ladder and crates, two children picking, a farm stall with scales and a blank price board, a lattice pie with a slice cut, three toffee apples on sticks, and spring blossom with bees.

Which page to start with

The single big apple is the simplest page on the site — one shape, thick lines, nothing else. The botanical plate, the patterned apple, the mandala and the orchard are the slow ones and work better with fineliners than pencils.
