The mane is yours

A horse's mane and tail are normally drawn as one solid dark shape, and on a galloping horse that is a third of the picture gone before you start. On every page here the mane is separate flowing strands with white paper between them, and so is the tail — so you can run one colour through them, or make every strand different. The hooves and muzzles are open too.

No dark leather

Saddles, bridles and riding boots usually print as solid brown-black. Here the western saddle's skirt is covered in twenty open tooled scrolls, the bridle carries eight open conchos, the lariat is seven separate coils, and the show tack is thin double lines with open buckles. Every strap is something to colour rather than something already coloured.

Four breeds you can tell apart

One page sets an Arabian, a Clydesdale, a Shetland pony and an Appaloosa side by side, each drawn with the features that identify it — the dished face, the leg feathering, the stocky build, the spotted blanket. A child who colours it will be able to name them afterwards.

Scenes as well as portraits

A girl riding at a canter, a carriage on a country lane, three wild horses at full stretch, a horse looking over a stable door, one jumping a show fence, a mare with her foal, and a carousel horse on its spiral pole.
