Frog Coloring Pages

Nothing arrives already coloured

Frogs are almost always printed with two solid black eyes, which takes the most interesting part of the face away before you start. Not here. Every eye in this set is an open ring with white paper inside it and only a pinhead dot for the pupil, so the eye is yours to colour.

The same goes for the rest. Every back marking is a separate outlined patch rather than a dark blotch, the pond is white paper with a few ripple lines instead of shading, the toadstool caps have open spots, the cattails are outlines rather than solid brown, and even the three poison dart frogs — whose whole point is brilliant solid colour — are drawn as bands, spots and lattice lines with white paper between them.

The life cycle, properly

One sheet is a real five-stage diagram: frogspawn, tadpole, tadpole with back legs, froglet with its tail still attached, and the adult frog, joined by arrows and labelled. The eggs are drawn as a circle inside a circle rather than the usual black dot, so those can be coloured too. It is the page to print for a school project.

Frogs and toads are not the same animal

One sheet has both side by side so the difference is obvious: the frog smooth and long-legged, the toad squatter with a bumpy back and shorter legs. The bumps are drawn as separate open circles, not as dark warts.

A template for cutting out

One sheet is a plain frog outline seen from above with almost nothing inside it and a smooth simple edge, meant for tracing round or cutting out rather than colouring in.

For older children and adults

The realistic frog is drawn as a proper study — correct proportions, the eardrum disc behind the eye, skin suggested by contour lines rather than shading. The patterned frog splits into about twelve panels of zentangle work, and the mandala builds rings of frogs, lily pads and dragonflies out from a face at the centre.

Which page to start with

The big frog and the template are the most forgiving — thick lines and large open areas. The realistic study, the patterned frog, the mandala and the pond scene are the slow ones.
