Most deer coloring pages are a deer standing alone in the middle of a blank page. These are built in three depths instead: something small and near along the bottom — stones, acorns, fallen leaves, mushrooms — the deer in the middle doing something, and a simple distance behind it of hills, reeds or a line of treetops. There is more to fill in, and it holds a child a good deal longer than an outline of an animal does.

Nothing is filled in black
A real deer has black hooves and a dark nose, and most printable pages copy that — which quietly removes the parts a child would most enjoy colouring. Here the hooves, the inner ears and the antlers are all drawn as hollow outlines. The only solid black on any page is the pupil of an eye, because that is how a coloring book draws a friendly face.
Easy through to detailed
The five easy pages have thick outlines and large open areas that suit a fat crayon and a four-year-old. The nine middle pages — the meadow, the stream, the autumn woods, the picnic, the snow — have enough going on to hold a school-age child for half an hour. The six detailed pages, including the patterned stag, the flower garden and the deer mandala, will take an adult most of an evening.

What to colour them with
The easy pages take crayon and marker well. The stag, the mandala and the flower garden are better with pencils — marker bleeds through the narrow bands and loses the pattern underneath.
