A ladybird is normally printed with solid black spots and a bee with solid black stripes, which is most of the insect gone before a child picks up a pencil. Here every spot is an outlined circle and every stripe is an outlined band. A ladybird can come out with purple spots, and that is the whole point.
The spider is an outline too
Spiders are almost always drawn as a black blob with legs. This one is hollow, sitting at the centre of a full round web with dew drops on it. The web is drawn as fine open lines, so it can be left white or picked out in silver.
Good for a minibeast topic
Between the nine species and the garden scene, the set covers most of what a primary minibeasts unit asks for. The garden page works as a spotting exercise as well as a colouring one — a bee, a dragonfly, a spider in its web, a ladybird, a snail and a long trail of ants are spread around the flowerbed.
