Feathers are the reason to print a bird page

A bird is one of the few subjects where the detail is naturally divided into hundreds of small closed shapes. The peacock is the clearest case: every tail feather ends in its own outlined eye motif, so the page is really a hundred small decisions rather than one big fill. The eagle works the same way with its flight feathers.

What is printed black

Bird art often prints the beak as a dark wedge and the head in shadow. Here the beaks, heads, bodies and feathers are open outlines, which matters more than it sounds — it is the difference between colouring a bird and colouring around one. The solid black that remains is small and mostly true to life: the pupils of the eyes, the tip of the flamingo’s beak, the black mask where the swan’s beak meets its face and the centres of the lower peacock eyespots.

The three long ones

The patterned owl, the bird mandala and the blossom tree are drawn for adults. The blossom tree has a dozen birds and two nests in it.

Printing

Print at 100% scale rather than “fit to page”, in Letter or A4 to match your paper.
